Solar powered sneakers

Context
Each year, eleven students from Delft, The Netherlands, compete in an international solar race as the Brunel Solar Team. This year the race was held in South-Africa. The Sasol Solar Challenge is an eight-day race without a single drop of fuel. The ultimate test for the newest technology in solar cars.
Goal
The ultimate goal of this campaign was to create visibility for the Brunel Solar Team through PR and to make consumers interested in the Sasol Solar Challenge.
Concept
This year, the Nuna 11S distinguishes itself from the competition and its predecessors with a unique design that would not look out of place in a Formula 1 racing stable. A real eye-catcher. By shifting the focus to the unique design elements of the solar car and bringing it to life in a product that we use every day, we targeted a wider audience.
Together with the team at Glasnost and freelance creative Julian Smink, I worked on multiple concepts resulting in the final concept. I was the creative lead in the execution phase, responsible for keeping the output aligned with the concept and advise the team where necessary.
Result
The first ever limited edition solar powered sneakers in the Netherlands. The unique design of the sneakers becomes visible when in contact with direct sunlight and is inspired by the looks of the Nuna 11S, the Dutch solar car. The custom design is painted by hand with photochromic paint by CustomKicksNL on white Robey sneakers. The colors of the design are inspired by the sunset of South Africa, the location of the Sasol Solar Challenge.
